James Joyce was born in this date in 1882 in Dublin, Ireland. Regarded as one of the finest writers in the English language (some would argue, the best) Joyce's reputation has increased with the passing years.

While not a horror writer, he did write honest portrails of the ins-and-outs of city life in Dublin. An Encounter is the second story from his famed anthology Dubliners. It tells the story of two school boys, who meet up with the ickiest old man this side of the Liffey.

And I put guest host The Crypt Keeper back in his tomb for another night.

Tonight, I offer to you an analysis of three classic tales from Alvin Schwartz trilogy of young adult horror anthologies. The Scary Stories trilogy was a highly popular, and controversial, compendium of folklore retold by author Alvin Schwartz. The books were a staple of my adolescence.They introduced me to horror as a literary genre, as opposed to just a filmic one. For that, I am eternally grateful.

I share with you three stories from Alvin Schwartz seminal work.

Consider this a primer on folklore, both new and old. While a good bit of Schwartz work deals with urban legends, that great genre of folklore will get its own episode soon.

In this episode you will hear the tragic stories of Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes--both of whom were killed on the same night, only blocks apart. Their deaths came to be known as the Double Event, and have influenced Ripper-lore to this day.

They were the crimes that shocked a nation and defined an era. Partly truth, and partly legend, the story of Jack the Ripper has fascinated and terrified the public for over one-hundred-and- twenty years. The identity and motive of the killer remains a mystery. All that is known for certain is that five women (that we know of) lost their lives in the autumn of 1888.

This episode begins a series of retellings of the lives and deaths of the so-called Canonical Five victims of Jack The Ripper. Their killer was never brought to justice. Their stories are often ignored. The mythos of Jack the Ripper has been romanticised in countless novels, films, and television programs. These dramatised accounts normally focus on the deeds and possible identity of the killer. The names of the victims often become plot devices in a murder mystery for entertainment. Instead, I offer an alternative with these following episodes. I present to you the tragic lives of those who perished under the knife of history's most infamous killer.

In this episode: The lives of Polly Ann Nichols and Annie Chapman.

While I have taken great care in the writing of this episode, I could not be true to the story of this case without being somewhat graphic. What you are about to hear are depictions of real death taken from coroner's reports and other sources.

65 Years of Freddie Mercury

Hi everyone!

It was sixty-five years ago today that one of rock's greatest voices was born. As the dynamic frontman of Queen, Freddie Mercury brought a mix of pure talent, charisma, and raw energy to the stage. In my opinion he had the best voice in Rock music (closely seconded by Jim Morrison).

Queen was part of the musical landscape of my childhood. Whether it be in the form of iconic albums like A Night at the Opera, or catchy tunes such as, A Crazy Little Thing Called Love--Queen was always on the tube or the stereo. How could one not dance to Another One Bites the Dust? Or, not sing along with the satiric Fat-Bottom Girls? The emotional power of the Highlander soundtrack is just as memorable as the film itself. The majesty of Queen's music isn't limited to any one medium. Whether listening to it in the solitude of one's room. Or, with an audience of revelers and friends, Queen's music has touched all of us.

Even after Freddie's passing in 1991, his stature has not diminished. The influence of his music has permeated some of hardrock and pop music's biggest names--Metallica, Foo Fighters, Guns and Roses, and Katy Perry...the list goes on.

There had never been a recording artist like Freddie before Queen's rise. And since he left us, that hasn't been one since. Though gone from us in person, he remains in spirit. His music will live on for future generations to discover. People of all ages will dance, sing-a-long, and emulate this unique talent for as long as we have rockers.

While an episode about Freddie simply wouldn't do justice to his memory, I did something else to honor him.

Nighmare Fuel Podcast--Episode Eight--Eldritch Biology 101: Cthulhu

H.P. Lovecraft's most famous creation goes under the microscope, in a manner of speaking. In this episode, I do an astrobiology primer on the Great Old One himself, Cthulhu!

Astrobiology is a nacent science, as we have yet to actually encounter alien life (intelligent, eldritch, or otherwise). However, it is a legitimate science, concerned with the potential forms that extraterrestrial life may take. While Cthulhu is a derived from very human concepts, he hales from a foreign planet. His unique biology allowed him to adapt to Earth's oceans--where he dwells in slumber until, "The stars are right."

These shows were staples of my teenage viewing habits. They acted as both discussion point, and story telling device.

When we have people in costumes making marriage proposals, Star Wars--themed weddings, and children named for characters in movies and TV shows--does fandom go too far sometimes? While I think it's up to the individual, others may disagree. Either way, it's a topic worth discussing.

I also give an overview of the new Hellraiser comic book, SPOILER FREE! The new eight issue series is co-written by the man himself, CLIVE BARKER! A glorious return to the world of Cenobites, Kirsty Cotton, and puzzle boxes from hell!

I hope your shotguns are loaded, and your shopping carts are full of MRE's. We're going to THE MALL! That's right--some shopping, a bit of fast food, shambling living dead roaming about. Oh, and make sure to check out the two for one sale at S-Mart. They have a deal on zombie dismemberment and disposal kits.

This blue light special is a seminal work in the history of horror cinema. It has influenced countless imitators, homages, and spoofs. Shot in Pennsylvania's Monroeville Mall (which is still inundated with souvenir hunters) Dawn of the Dead runs head wound to bloody head wound with it's predicessor, Night of the Living Dead. Both films went onto influence pretty much everything else in the zombie subgenre.

In 1968, Night of the Living Dead shocked audiences. It's mix of gore, nudity, and post apocalyptic imagery gave birth to the modern horror film. Taboos were broken, and the seeds were sown for one of the longest running franchises in horror history--the..."Of The Dead" films.

This film also launched the careers of George A. Romero--Lord of all Zombies, and John Russo--Legendary Scribe of the Dead.

This is the film that started the zombie apocalypse sub-genre, and unleased hordes of the undead all over the world!

Nightmare Fuel--Episode One--Voodoo and Zombies

Good evening!

Welcome to the newly reVAMPED Nightmare Fuel Podcast! Formerly The Fly Paper Dungeon Podcast, Nightmare Fuel seeks to be better, darker, and more focused. The past thirty-nine episodes were just a warm up compared to what I have in store for you, my deviants!

This week, I detail the history and traditions of Voodoo and Zombies. I answer questions, "What is Voodoo?" And, "Where did zombies come from?"

The new show is massively different from the previous podcast.

Here are some of the differences...

First, the episodes are shorter and more focused. They'll usually clock in at around thirty minutes or so. This week's episode is about thirty-two minutes.

Second, there is no more, "News and Reviews" section. This was removed to both streamline the broadcast, and to stay on topic. I also felt that any "current" news would be ancient history for new listeners. For the latest news and reviews in horror, I'll refer listeners to http://www.fearnet.com
They also have free movies and shows on the site. I enjoy many a night browsing that site.

Third, there's no bumper music. Instead, I'll feature one song per week. This keeps the show focused. It also keeps the length and file size down.

Fourth, I'm using podbean.com as my new hosting site. The show will still be broadcast from this site, via an embeddable player. You can also download via podbean. I'm going to see about putting the show on iTunes. This will make the show more accessible. I will also upload files to my old hosting site, Archive.org. This also allows the show to be archived on a permenant basis, and available for download without an iTunes account. (Just click the link below the player, same as before).

That's about all I can think of for right now.

A Brief Word on Changes

Hey everybody!

Just a quick reminder...

In two days, the Fly Paper Dungeon will be re-defield as NIGHTMARE FUEL. Sounds great, more killing. The name change is something that I'd been looking forward to for some time. It is to be official on July 1st. Make sure to update your URLs, RSS, email subscription etc. on that date.

Also, I'd like to inform you all that part of the new format change is the addition of theme months. July is ZOMBIE MONTH! Every episode I do in July will be about zombies, Voodoo, etc. Though I may drop in a bonus episode here and there about unrelated topics.

Name Changes and New Format...NIGHTMARE FUEL!

Hallo, my deviants!

Before I post this week's episode, I want to inform all of you that starting on July 1st The Fly Paper Dungeon will have a new name. From that day forth it will be known as NIGHTMARE FUEL!

I've contemplated changing the name for ages, and even posted a few polls as to the subject. I feel that it's time for this change to occur. The podcast, and all that comes will it, will continue--same zombie time, same zombie channel. I'm just changing the name, and the format, a little.

I will post another reminder to update your bookmarks, RSS feeds, etc. when the time comes. I will also give reminders in the episodes to come. This podcast has been on the air for almost a year at this point. Though I receive little feedback, I still enjoy doing it. I know that those of you who follow via the Google Follower function, and the RSS feed, enjoy it as well.

This week's episode is coming up in a day or two. The topic will be...Clive Barker's Hellraiser.

Episode 37--Horror Film Casting (Fantasy League)

Good Evening!

Tonight, I play director, as I cast adaptations of classic Gothic novels. What if Vincent Price had played Dracula? Would you like to see have seen Audrey Hepburn as Christine in The Phantom of the Opera? I do!

I give a character-by-character breakdown, and cast these famous monsters.

I would also like note that today would have been the 98th birthday of Peter Cushing. May 27th is, oddly enough, the 89th birthday of Sir Christopher Lee and the would-be 100th birthday of Vincent Price! While I've talked about Price and Cushing before, I have yet to give Sir Christopher his just due. I will rectify that omission soon enough. In this episode I pay tribute to these three icons, while playing fantasy director.

Episode 35: Horror Trends In History (Horror Through the Ages)

The history of horror is a varied one. Only Science Fiction is anywhere near as diversified. Trends have come and stayed? Yes, even when certain trends are dominant (think Jason and Freddy in the 80's), they never completely subside. Despite the slew of slasher flicks in the 1980's, and the revivial of zombies and vampires in recent years--trends in horror subside, but never completely die (just like Dracula, Freddy, Jason, your nightmares about gym class in high school).

If Ben Franklin is right, "The only thing that is certain in life is death and taxes," then we can be assured that horror trends (and your favorite monsters) will recycle, but never fade away.

Ridley's Scott's sci-fi/horror mashup is a modern classic. At thirty-two years of age, it looks fresh as the day it was hatched. Written by Dan O'Bannon (Return of the Living Dead, Total Recall), and starring Sigourney Weaver in her first film--ALIEN has gone on to spawn three sequels, and inspire an entire subgenre of horror.

This week, I do a feature-length audio commentary--dedicated to a film that was born the same year I was. It sits in my top ten for several reasons--not the least of which is that it still has the power to move me.

Episode 34: Sunshine (2007)

Good evening, space cadets!

This week, I discuss Danny Boyle's underappreciated Sci-Fi epic Sunshine. I also weigh in on the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton (if Pippa is single, I'm available). I also give my impression of death of Public Enemy Number One (You know who...he's been all over the TV lately). This intro segment lasts for only ten minutes. After that, I move onto the main topic of the show, which lasts about thirty-five minutes (including music).

Sunshine is one of those moving, somber films, that is perfect to watch during a time of great social changes adn reflection. It helps to put it all in perspective. In addition to the magnificent direction of Danny Boyle, and the innovate script by Alex Garland, it also features a beautiful score by composer John Murphy (28 Days Later), and synth pop group Underworld.

Episode 33--What are "B" Movies?

Good Eeeeevening, my fellow deviants!

I pose a question to all of you, and to myself, "Does the "B" movie still exist?" Sure, we have the back catalogue of Roger Corman and Jack Hill--which serve as latenight movie fodder. But are there modern "B" movies? Would you consider Stars Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones, or Transformers to be the stuff of "B" movies? When George Lucas and Steven Spielberg changed the game of Hollywood in the late 70's, budgets, and cinema, were never the same. Movies that many of us grew up with, staples of the genre, would have once been considered "B" movies.

Stories of space wars and aliens, were considered pulp magazine page fillers, and saturday matinee tripe. Now, movies about giant robots from space are blockbusters.

What defines a "B" Movie? Is it budget, subject matter, or genre?

While I may not have definitive answers in this week's episod--I bring up some interesting ideas.

Originally published in 1888, in the anthology The Phantom Rickshaw and Other Eerie Tales, the titular story has become one of the best known, and most reprinted, ghost stories of all time. Hello my lovely deviants!

This week, I review the Hammer Frankenstein films, starring Peter Cushing!

Cushing is one of the seminal faces of horror. He acted in numerous films in the genre--for both Hammer, Amicus, and other British studios at the time. He is also familiar to fans of Star Wars for his turn as Grand Moff Tarkin, the only man who could control Vader's murderous impulses. Cushing played some of the best-known filmic and literary characters of all time. He is the only actor to have played all of the following: Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, Baron Frankenstein, Sherlock Holmes, and Dr. Who. He often co-starred with his friend, and colleage, Sir. Christopher Lee--usually in an adverserial role. The two would go on to co-star in over twenty films together!

This week's episode is a starting point for the work of this lovely human being, and phenominal actor.

Episode 28: 28 Days Later...

It's the rage...VIRUS! This week, on The Fly Paper Dungeon.

I provide a feature-length commentary to Danny Boyle's post-apocalyptic nightmare. 28 Days Later is often credited with reviving the zombie sub-genre, and rightly so. Although many may consider the "rage infected" to not be zombies. One thing is certain, this film did breath new life into a classic movie monster. It also revitalized the "Man wakes up, and the world has gone to hell," concept, as written about in such novels as Shelley's The Last Man, Wyndham's Day of the Triffids, and Matheson's I Am Legend.

This film is also an homage to such genre favorites as Night of The Living Dead, The Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man, Romero's original version of The Crazies.

Episode 26--Hey, Joe Strummer!

This week, Johnny Zombie continues his Rock Doc ark with...Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten. This brilliant documentary from 2008 details the life and career of Joe Strummer--the frontman of the legendary rock band The Clash. A mix of archival footage, live performances, and interviews with friends and family--The Future is Unwritten is an honest account of one of Rock music's best and brightest icons.

Then, I strap on my guns for "a story of blood, money, guns, coffee, and sexual tension."
Straight to Hell is an homage to the Eastwood/Leone "Man with No Name" westerns. Set in 1987, Straight to Hell tells the story of a band of outlaws on the run from their disgruntled boss. They've botched a job, and are lying low in town full of crazies. This western fantasy has cult classic written all over it. Directed by Alex Cox (a cult figure himself, best known for directing Sid and Nancy). This shoot'em up is just as much a comedy (in the vein of Simon Pegg/Nick Frost/Edgar Wright flicks) as it is a tribute to Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah. The flim features a veritable who's-who of punk, new wave, and cinema. Starring Joe Strummer, Courtney Love, The Pogues, Elvis Costello, Grace Jones, and Dennis Hopper (just to name a few).

This week, I dig up the dirt on LEMMY--the new documentary about Lemmy Kilmister, the voice of MOTORHEAD! He's an icon of heavy metal, a living legend, and THE ultimate rock star. Lemmy has survive, and thrived, in an industry that leaves behind a body count. Lemmy pays tribute to a rock pioneer by turning on the camera, and presenting the man himself--warts and all. The result is time well spent with the real deal.

I also discuss Jonathan Demme's concert film Store Front Hitchcock. From 1997, this film showcases British rocker and songwriter, Robyn Hitchcock. A true musician, story teller, and songwriter--Hitchcock is one of the all-time great cult music heroes.

First up is the innovative classic, The Last Man on Earth. Based on the scripted by Richard Matheson, this is the first (and best) adaptation of his famous novel I Am Legend. Filmed in Italy in 1964, this black and white stunner became a major influence on George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead.

Next is the Saturday night chiller classic, The House on Haunted Hill. Directed by William Castle, this was one of his most successful films of his career. An eccentric millionaire wagers $10,000 bucks a piece to a group of strangers. The only catch is that they have to spent a night in a haunted house. This film carries on the tradition of the "Spooky old house."

In FROM THE VAULTS I dig up the Italian-produced, and made in Miami classic, Super Fuzz!
Starring Spaghetti Western veteran Terence Hill, and legendary character actor Ernest Borgnine. This film was a staple of my childhood, and HBO's regular line up back in the 1980's. It's a classic comedy that needs to be re-visited.

Episode 22--EVIL BABIES!

Good evening, my lovelies!

This week, Johnny Zombie takes a trip to the maternity ward...in HELL!

EVIL BABIES is the topic this week! I pay a visit to cradle of fear, with two tiny-tot-based horror birthings.

First up is the 2009 shocker Grace, starring the lovely and talented Jordan Ladd. While not a perfect film, it is memorable. It also succeeds in delivering the gore factor in oodles of cuddly ickiness.

The second film discussed is Roman Polanski's classic adaptation of Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby. A controversial film in its day, it still packs a punch. From Mia Farrow's magnificent performance, to the unsettling ending, this film has not lost any of it's (Satanic) power over its forty year history. (BTW: I don't spoil the ending!)

Both films are discuss spoiler free! Ok, some minor spoilers on Grace, but nothing that isn't shown to you in the trailer.

The Fly Paper Dungeon celebrates the 30th anniversary of of this landmark film. The Empire Strikes Back took the Star Wars universe to the dark side and back. The personal favorite of actress Carrie Fisher, The Empire Strikes Back is the benchmark by which all Star Wars films are judged. Its reputation, as part of the original trilogy, has held firm over the past 30 years.

Future episodes about A New Hope, and Return of the Jedi, are forthcoming.

Episode 19--TRON

Greetings, programs!

This week, Johnny Zombie gives his personal perspective on a true genre classic--Disney's TRON (1982).

The first film to incorporate CG animation, and combine it with live action, TRON was a trailblazer that forged a path twenty years ahead of its time.

Starring Jeff Bridges as hacker Kevin Flynn--TRON is the story of living programs who fight against the Master Control Program computer. Their mission is to liberate cyberspace. Sound familiar? A similar plot would be recycled for the Matrix Trilogy in '99. My recommendation--see the real deal--revisit the world of TRON.

I'm looking forward to the coming sequel, TRON: Legacy, which premieres later this month (Dec. 17th).

Tron was also the first film to comment on the influence of computers in our everyday life. It presaged a time when Users would live vicariously through their virtual counterparts.

Join me on this journey back to one of my favorite films from childhood.

Good evening, children of the night...

Vamps, vixens, survivor girls, and scream queens.

The women of horror are known by many titles. They all have one thing in common--THEY ROCK! This episode is all about the ladies of horror, as I count down my top five favorite fearless female characters. From the gutsy Ellen Ripley, to the sassy Sookie Stackhouse--Johnny Zombie courts beauty, danger, and talent. Kudos are given not only the characters, but the actresses that brought them to life.

This is a light-hearted escape into fandom. A look at women who deserve admiration and respect-- because they could save your hide from snarling alien beasts, and guys with chainsaws (if only I could find a woman like this in real life...yet I digress).

A memorial is given to Ingrid Pitt, the late, great, queen of the night! A staple of Hammer Horror films, Ms. Pitt passed away on November 23rd, at the age of 73. She co-starring with Peter Cushing and Sir Christopher Lee in many Hammer Films. She originated the role of Le Fanu's lesbian vampire icon Carmilla. During her fantastic career, she also co-starred with Clint Eastwood, in the WWII action flick Where Eagles Dare. She will be greatly missed.

Inspired by the self-proclaimed, "adult illustrated fantasy magazine, Heavy Metal is a midnight movie classic that has only grown in stature over it's 30 year history." Heavy Metal continues to rock audiences with its masterful blend of sci-fi, action, horror, comedy, and sexuality (everything a growing geek, or geekette, needs).

This week's episode is dedicated to Dillon's review of Theater Pub 9's Lovecraft Festival, and THE "most famous book that never was," The Necronomicon.

Also discussed is the recent passing of super producer Dino De Laurentiis (he will be greatly missed).
